How does the Airin Smart Shield make my mask safer?

You can wear almost any type of mask from an N95 mask to a simple home made mask they will all benefit from an improvement in safety and comfort.

The most comfortable mask is a cloth mask that wraps sufficiently under the chin to support the Air Curtain without the need to use any additional support.

You can wear masks with a clear front suitable for communicating with people with hearing difficulties.

The clear face screens will also be safer and more comfortable with the use of the air curtain.  The air curtain will flush out the trapped CO2 and the positive pressure will prevent the entry of dirty air into the space behind the screen

How does the Airin Smart Shield make my mask safer?

The positive pressure behind the mask makes it impossible for dirty air containing viruses, toxic chemicals or pollutant particles from passing through the mask fabric or via leak paths into the air that you are actually breathing.  Technically this type of respirator would be classified as a Powered Air Purifying Respirator or PAPR.  There is a great deal of understanding of these devices and their high level of protection.  If you want to dig deeper we suggest some of the papers here https://www.safetyinfo.com/respiratory-protection-respirators-safety-index/

The UV-C light generated in a special LED inside the irradiation chamber damages DNA molecules so that any virus or bacteria particles can not reproduce.

Some of the carbon dioxide that you breath out is trapped in the dead-space volume behind the mask, in the mask fabric, and a layer of still air immediately outside the mask.  The continuous introduction of clean air into this space dilutes its concentration and between breaths flushes it out of all these spaces.  Although carbon dioxide is not highly dangerous to most, it does make you feel uncomfortable and causes fatigue, headaches and loss of cognitive ability.

The filtration efficiency of the clean air generator exceeds 99% for most particles including virus particles and has no leakage loss as with a typical mask.  The air you breathe in is much cleaner than with any other non-pressurized respirator or face covering such as a surgical mask or N95 mask.

How does the Airin Smart Shield make my mask more comfortable?
  • You do not need to tighten your mask against your face and can wear it very loosely as the positive pressure stops any entry of dirty air through leak paths between the mask and your face .
  • You can wear almost any type of fabric and face covering style as it is the positive pressure that excludes dirty air not the fabric itself.  This includes masks with clear plastic for people with hearing disabilities.
  • Your hot stuffy breath and associated carbon dioxide is flushed out continuously.
  • You will never feel anxious, confused or claustrophobic as a result of rebreathing carbon dioxide.  You will never suffer from headaches often associated with inhaling too much carbon dioxide.
  • Your glasses do not fog up because of the demisting and diluting action of the incoming clean air.
  • The UV-C light is highly dangerous for human skin and is located well away from the face.
How does the Airin Smart Shield make my mask more comfortable?

A specially designed LED emits a unique wavelength of light between 200 and 275nm that is particularly good at damaging DNA and destroying the ability of a virus or bacteria to reproduce.  This light is emitted in a reflective chamber where it is reflected thousands of times off the highly reflective walls of the chamber before the air can pass through the chamber.  The small number of particles that escape the filters may contain virus or bacteria and these are destroyed by these rays.

Does the Airin Smart Shield protect others from catching a viruses if you have it ?
  • Using the Smart Shield under any type of mask, protects others, if you have the virus.  It does so to the same extent as if you were wearing that particular mask without it.  It does not improve or reduce the effectiveness of the mask in this regard but it protects you much more.
  • Although the extra air volume means more passage of air through the mask and the leaks around the mask no more virus particles will be expelled because your breath is simply diluted by the extra air.  The same number of particles will be caught in the mask fabric and the same number will exit via the leak paths.  The better the mask fabric and the better the fit the more safety for others, as is always the case.
  • Because of the extra comfort you will not feel compelled to lower the mask and catch your breath as often as you would without the Airin Smart Shield
How effective are the filters ?

Filters are available in two grades.  The first grade filters out over 99.9% of particles larger than 1 microns and 98% of particles smaller than 1 micron.  The second grade includes activated carbon that will remove toxic chemicals and particles but its filtration effectiveness is 97% for particles larger than 1 micron and 95% for particles less than 1 micron.

How and when do I change the filters ?
  • The filter screens on either side of the clean air generator are removable and are held in place by magnets.  You simply lift them up, dispose of the dirty filter and replace a new one on each side.  Please note possible interference of these magnets with pacemakers.
  • It is possible to use the same filters for as long as a week although as the filters become dirty the air flow will reduce somewhat.  Replace every 2-3 days or whenever you notice a loss of air flow.
How often should I replace my face mask ?
  • Use the same replacement or washing procedures you would without the Smart Shield.
  • However because almost no dirty air is passing through the mask if you are certain you are not sick the mask fabric is not becoming contaminated by either virus particles or pollution and it may be possible to wear it for longer periods.
How do I use the three blower speeds ?
  • The speed button on the side of the clean air generator switches from off to three speeds 1, 2 and 3 by pressing the button sequentially with the fourth press turning it off.
  • The lowest speed is the normal speed used when not carrying out any exercise that would increase breathing rate.  High speed is next and used if performing light exercise with Very high for when exercising hard.
  • The higher speeds can be used to improve comfort if particularly hot but will reduce life of the battery
Can I have a conversation or talk while wearing the Airin Smart Shield?
  • Yes you can and you will not be inhibited in any way.  The blower itself makes very little noise.  The mask does not muffle or reduce the sound level significantly.
  • When talking, particularly continuously, people often drop their mask below their chin or remove it altogether.  This is very dangerous as when talking you emit many particles at high velocities.   The reason people do this is partly because they want people to see their full face but predominantly because of increased carbon dioxide rebreathing.  When you talk your breathing becomes much shallower and the dead space in your mask often becomes all you get to breathe in particularly when it simply inflates and deflates like a paper bag.  It contains up to 8% CO2 and you immediately feel the need (when talking) to remove it to get rid of the CO2.
  • Wearing the Airin Smart Shield allows you to talk at a meeting or carry on general conversation without exposing yourself and others to pathogens.   You will find it perfectly comfortable to talk all the time.
How much air flow is generated ?
  • The air flow on the Normal speed using the First grade filters is 60 litres per minute which is around double the maximum exhalation rate while relaxed and equal to the rate when exercising lightly.  The average inhalation when relaxed is less than 10 litres per minute and when walking briskly could reach 30 litres per minute.  The peak inhalation rates are typically three times the average rates.
  • At High speed and very high speed it increases to 80 litres and 100 litres respectively.
  • When exercising very heavily the inhalation rate could exceed 100 litres per minute necessitating some inward flow through the mask fabric.  This will reduce the absolute protection but continue to purge the CO2 almost 100%  because the 100 litres per minute flow will typically remain higher than the average inhalation.
  • The use of the Second grade filters will lift the 100 litres per minute to over 120 litres per minute further extending the usefulness of the system for very heavy exercise.

Can I exercise when wearing a mask and the Airin smart shield ?
  • Yes you can but with some care taken once average respiration rate starts to exceed 100 litres per minute or around 10 times the normal relaxed breathing rate.
  • Be mindful of the very rapid increase in respiration with exercise.  Masks without an Airin Smart Shield can be very dangerous when exercising because of the rebreathing of carbon dioxide.  Respiration rates increase by more than 12 times that of a relaxed breathing rate when exercising
What is the battery life ?
  • Using the Normal speed setting full charged battery will run for 12 hours with any filter type.
  • At high speed 10 hours and very high 8 hours.
  • These times are guaranteed not to reduce to less than 80% over the warrantee period.
How do I charge it and for how long ?
  • A USB cable is provided that plugs into USB ports of a computer or phone charger outputting 5 Volts.
  • Charging time is dependent on the available current from the charger with a 2 Amp port charging it in around 2-3 hours.
  • When plugged in the charging light in the clean air generator will flash green.  When full it will display a solid green.  When you remove the cable this light will go out.
Can I use it while charging ?
  • Yes you can but because the charging plug is removed from the bottom of the clean air generator a small amount of air leakage can occur reducing the efficiency from 99.9% to around 95%.
  • Ensure that after charging you replace the charging plug to maintain full filtration efficiency.
How is the clean air generator attached ?

The magnets that hold the filter screens allow a magnetic strip with matching magnets in the filter screens to lock the generator onto your shirt, T- Shirt or blouse either inside or outside and at a variable height.

It is also possible to place it in a shirt pocket or into a fabric bag hanging around your neck.  The magnets are strong enough to ensure a good safe fit but it is also possible to add an elastic cord around the neck that helps support the weight with less dragging down on your clothes.  The magnet is almost always useful to stop the generator swinging around.  The fabric bag must be made of porous material that can match your clothes or your homemade mask.

It is also possible to attach some of the elastic cord provided to the generator so that it is hung around you neck but also fixed to clothing with the magnet strip.

How is the air curtain attached ?

The air curtain is normally attached using elastic cords around the ears similar to a conventional mask.  Typically the tension required in the elastic cords around your ears is less than 25 gms. per ear as the air curtain weighs only 15 grams.  The cords length can be adjust to suit different face sizes with a simple knot.  These cords can also be placed behind the head.  In this way it can be worn without the mask relying on the air curtain to provide significant protection from pollution and pathogens but of course not protecting others.

It is also possible to simply use the mask itself to hold it in position.  Any mask that extends under the chin will adequately support it as it weighs only 15 grams.  No extra tension is required. Often less is OK because the mask can be a looser fit although the weight of the mask and the air curtain is always held up by the wearers nose with some noses better at this than others!

When wearing a “cowboy” style mask that does not normally extend under the chin it is not possible to use the mask to support the air curtain and the straps must be used.

Can it interfere with a Pacemaker ?
  • The standard unit with magnets for holding the filters could interfere with a pacemaker unless placed at least six inches (150 mm.) from it
  • We make a special unit without magnets for people worried about this.  The filter screens are held in place by an elastic fabric bag that can be fastened to the clothes as an alternative to the magnet system.
  • Although there are also magnets in the motor these are very small and not considered dangerous even if located very close to the pacemaker.  However it is advisable to remain at least 6 inches (150 mm.) away.
  • We provide two tube lengths in each pack allowing the clean air generator lower on the body away from the pacemaker.  Some small loss of air flow will occur when using the longer tube.  The tubes can be cut to adjust for the most comfortable arrangement.  Replacement tubes are available.
What is the guarantee period for the Airin Smart Shield?
  • The product is guaranteed for 12 months against defects in workmanship provided all operational instructions are followed.
  • The battery is guaranteed on a prorate basis to remain at 80% of its original capacity for a period of 12 months.  Batteries can be purchased separately and can be replaced by most electronic shops or by someone with a little experience in this.
  • The filters, tubes, and elastic cords are considered consumables and can be ordered separately with filters.
